China marks 77th anniversary of start of anti-Japan war – Xinhua

Nobody can change history and facts. Anyone who intends to deny, distort or beautify history will not find agreement among Chinese people and people of all other countries,” Xi said, referring to concern that Japan is trying to distort the history of the war.

German spy warns firms ‘easy prey’ to espionage as Merkel visits China – Reuters

Samtidigt varnar en tysk säkerhetschef för att tyska, mellanstora företag är lätta byten för kinesiskt industrispionage: ”They often don’t really know what their crown jewels are or what the other side is interested in,” he told Welt am Sonntag. ”They are up against very powerful adversaries. The Chinese technical intelligence agency alone has over 100,000 employees,” Maassen said, in an excerpt of an interview to be published on Sunday, when Merkel begins her seventh trip to China.

Xi’s Anti-Corruption Campaign Signals Power Play for 2017 – Bloomberg

“An overriding influence in the Politburo would make him have the power of discourse and the power of decision-making, because all of the most important matters will have to be discussed and approved by the Politburo,” said Hu Xingdou, a professor of economics at the Beijing Institute of Technology. Xi stands a good chance of stacking more of his supporters on the Central Committee, the wider panel that selects the Politburo, Hu said. “Besides deterring potential opponents and winning subordinates’ allegiance, Xi’s anti-graft drive is also good at weakening ’politics by elders,’ Hu said.

China second-quarter GDP seen steady at 7.4 percent, recovery in sight – Reuters

Indeed, even though economists expect the headline growth rate to cling to an 18-month low of 7.4 percent, they also believe that China’s export and manufacturing sectors likely enjoyed their best performances in several months in June. ”We expect China’s upcoming June and second-quarter data to show an economy that is still recovering,” UBS analysts said in a note to clients. ”With more easing measures underway and an ongoing export recovery, sequential growth momentum should warm up further in the third quarter.”

Strikes and worker protests gain momentum in China as economy stutters – CLB

In all, China Labour Bulletin recorded 235 incidents on our Strike Map during this period, 49 percent higher than the same period last year, which had 158 incidents, and 180 percent higher than the second quarter of 2012, which featured 84 incidents.

Q. and A.: Lyle Goldstein on China and the Vietnamese Military – NYT

Vietnam has made some wise investments as described above and could almost certainly inflict losses against the Chinese Navy and Air Force. Yet China has been engaged in a process of intense military modernization now for two decades and is reaping the dividends. In preparing for various conflict scenarios that potentially involve the United States and/or Japan, China has built forces that are well equipped and highly trained. In the critical areas of submarines, surface combatants and fast attack craft, China also may count on a very considerable numerical advantage that would likely allow China to prevail despite taking losses.
